Time Travel
Ever since the days of Jules Verne, people have wondered about the possibility of time travel. Is it something we can achieve, or are all the time travel theories nothing more than good science fiction? Despite the proliferation of time travel movies that feature all sorts of time travel devices, the fact is that we have yet to invent a working time travel machine. The philosophy of time travel insists the concept is viable, but how to go about breaking through a time barrier, much less controlling the destination of time travel, has yet to be perfected even in theory. Many science fiction writers of high caliber have presented time travel theories, weaving the philosophy of time travel into their stores, as well as instructions on time travel itself. Andy Pero style time travel, as well as the future history type of time travel found in Robert Heinlein’s Future History series, certainly raise some interesting ideas on how time works, and how humanity may one day be able to manipulate flight time travel itself. While they make for excellent reading, none of them are based on current scientific abilities. So the question remains: is time travel possible? And will humanity ever achieve the ability to master time travel?

Of course, some detractors raise the very valid point of whether or not time travel is actually desirable. We have no way of knowing how intrusion of a modern day person into a past historical setting would change the flow of time. In like manner, we do not know if there is only one direction time travel. Could one go into the past, but never be able to access the future once again? Could some sort of time travel clock be developed that would help control what time era one lands in, or would it be a random process? These and other questions continue to boggle the mind.
For now, time travel is nothing more than an idea that captures our imaginations. But given the human capacity for finding answers to hard questions, there is always the possibility that some new technology will provide answers to these questions when we least expect them. |
